The present work wants to explore the linguistic and intercultural issues translators have to overcome when translating for young adults. Because of the differences in age and intellectual progress of young adult readers, a broad range of literary products have been considered and a short introduction to the history as well as the characteristics of YAL is provided in the first part of the book. In the second part, through an analysis of 3 case studies, a number of issues and challenges commonly encountered while translating YAL novels are addressed. The focus is on the translation of dialects and slangs, the translation of fantasy names and finally, the many issues encountered in the translation of Cultural Specific Items.

Abstract

The present work wants to explore the linguistic and intercultural issues translators have to overcome when translating for young adults. Because of the differences in age and intellectual progress of young adult readers, a broad range of literary products have been considered and a short introduction to the history as well as the characteristics of YAL is provided in the first part of the book. In the second part, through an analysis of 3 case studies, a number of issues and challenges commonly encountered while translating YAL novels are addressed. The focus is on the translation of dialects and slangs, the translation of fantasy names and finally, the many issues encountered in the translation of Cultural Specific Items.
