The research delves into the Vicentine artistic patronage between XV and XVI centuries, with a specific focus on the carved altars. I have privileged a cross-boundary approach in order to tackle the topic from different perspectives. The first chapter deals with the Dominican church of Santa Corona, which represents the main case study: thanks to new archival evidence I have reassessed the architecture of the whole east-end, and I have hypothesised a new chronology for the Valmarana chapel. In order to accomplish with this task, I have combined different sources, like the XVI century Vicentine chronicles, unpublished archival documents, and the reports of the archaeological findings which came to light during the recent restorations. The study continues with the analysis of the altars of the left nave. The second and the third chapters investigate a group of less known monuments: the Velo altar, the church of San Rocco, and the Loggia Zeno. The line of enquiry has firstly endorsed a thoughtful revision of the written sources, and then it has entailed the art historical analysis, aiming to a better understanding of the role played by the altars in the wider context of the Vicentine architecture before Andrea Palladio’s affirmation. In all the aforementioned cases I have tried to highlight the cultural profile of the patrons, because this aspect has been usually left behind.
