This paper deals with the relationship between verbs and their arguments, investigating the so called locative alternation in Czech in the light of the the Construction Grammar Approach. On this basis the two alterning constructions, i.e. the causative movement construction and the resultative one, are seen to be linked by a metaphorical relation, the resultative construction being a metaphorical extension of the causative movement one. On the basis of their lexical meaning, the author defines four classes of verbs, which allow the locative alternation in Czech. A particular attention is devoted to the role of verbal prefixes in allowing or disallowing the verbs to appear in both constructions, which form the locative alternation: while prefix na- is claimed to allow the verbs to appear in both constructions, the causative movement construction and the resultative one, the prefix po- is claimed to allow the verbs to appear just in the resultative construction.
