A complex reorganisation of electricity power industry has started in Europe. In this context the large-scale integration of distributed generation can significantly contribute to EU energy policy by increasing the share of RES, by using primary energy efficiently and by ensuring that energy supply is secure, safe and supplied at an agreed quality and, eventually, at a competitive cost. This integration, however, implies a shift towards a new architecture of electricity systems that requires the solution of both technical and political issues in order to design an electricity market that is open and transparent and that gives fair chances to different types of actors.
