Design Automation (DA) is a methodology that permits to automate the design process of a product by representing in a software program the activities and the design knowledge (e.g., engineering rules) that an expert accomplishes in a traditional approach. In such a context, we present a methodology, named MEDEA (MEthodology for DEsign Automation), to develop KBE applications specifically conceived for SMEs. It is characterized by a reengineering activity of the design process and the use of tools more suitable to engineers than to IT experts. MEDEA considers various issues, from product/process knowledge representation to knowledge integration within PDM repositories. It has been experimented and validated considering various industrial test cases, each of them focused on a specific problem of product design.
