In a classical perspective, culture is often thought in opposition to nature. Rousseau has considered culture like a central category in many of his works. The purpose of this paper is to show the main characteristics of culture in Rousseau’s educational project, as it is presented in Emilio. The category of culture has been interrogated in the light of some twentieth-century interpretations, particularly Derrida’s one, who analyzes Rousseau’s texts in the second part of Grammatology. Those readings demonstrate culture isn’t in opposition to nature in Rousseau’s writings, but it has a different meaning, because it is like an additional continuous of reality.
