We consider the problem of spatial interpolation and outline the theory behind kriging and more specifically intrinsic random function kriging. We also mention thin-plate spline theory and show its link with kriging in order to overcome problems in which the available data are not sufficient to estimate the spatial co-variance structure of the process. A generalization of the theory to include kriging with directional derivatives is also considered.
