It is the purpose of this chapter to investigate the extent to which such social practices as witness hearings within arbitral proceedings are managed by the arbitral panel in order to analyze the way in which arbitrators display neutrality and/or mitigation as well as the way they engage in various conversational strategies so as to establish fairness. Specifically, this study seeks to identify and describe the conversational devices that arbitrators use in order to display their neutrality.
