Rolf Dieter Brinkmann's "Rom, Blicke" appeared in 1979 after the writer's death. Almost meant as an overturning of the canon of bourgeois trip in modern Europe, i.e. studied by most scholars as a critical and desecrating reading of Goethe's account on Rome, which was written some years after his trip to Italy in 1786-1788, this work demands to be (re)read by talking into account the real archeological and urban situation on the city during the 1970s. Such approach would allow to argue that the subversive nature of Brinkmann's cultural message, who does not hesitate to exploit any negative stereotype in order to portrait the life in Rome at the time of his stay in Italy's capital, strongly reduces itself once it is analysed at the wake of Rome's road system and archeological sites real state of degradation at that time.
