The data provide evidence that pragmatic development has occurred over the observation period. At T1 the learners tend to utter their requests in single long speech turns, whereas the native speakers prefer to split the requesting moves into several short turns. Furthermore, in learners’ requests internal modifiers are less in terms of variety and frequency. Over three years, the learners’ requestive style becomes increasingly more target-like in both the distribution of utterances and the use of internal modifiers. The results seem to confirm the developmental pattern hypothesized for interlanguage requests on the basis of previous research, yet suggesting a partial revision of the acquisition sequence at the highest stages.
