The corrosion behavior of stainless steels in concrete is described. The studies carried out on this matter are illustrated. The importance of pitting potential and critical chloride content is underlined. The behavior of different stainless steels (austenitic AISI 304 and 316, super-austenitic 254 SMO, duplex 23Cr4Ni, martensitic AISI 410, ferritic 430 and carbon steel for comparison purpose) in 'sound' or carbonated concrete, with or without chlorides, at low or high temperature, when stainless steel is coupled or not with usual steel reinforcement is illustrated. A comparison between the use of stainless steel and the main types of additional protection is given.
