The major aim of this paper is to test if the metaphor of the Dark times used by Arendt to describe the spiritual situation in Europe after World War Two is still helpful to understand our present world. To do this, I will ask for the support of a cultural resource which has been underestimated for a long time by western intellectuals and quickly dismissed after 1989: the works of the so-called Dissidents. The expression ‘the care of the soul’ is unique to the greatest philosopher of Czech dissidence, Jan Patočka.

Abstract

The major aim of this paper is to test if the metaphor of the Dark times used by Arendt to describe the spiritual situation in Europe after World War Two is still helpful to understand our present world. To do this, I will ask for the support of a cultural resource which has been underestimated for a long time by western intellectuals and quickly dismissed after 1989: the works of the so-called Dissidents. The expression ‘the care of the soul’ is unique to the greatest philosopher of Czech dissidence, Jan Patočka.
