Tensegrity Structures are three dimensional grids, where some elements work only in tension and the others are only in compression. Abstract

Tensegrity Structures are three dimensional grids, where some elements work only in tension and the others are only in compression. After describing the didactical experiences in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bergamo, we pass to review the basic notions and structural principles for the design of tensegrity systems. The potential of tensegrity structures in creating a new and competitive market is then investigated by comparing the roof of the headquarters of the Lombardy Regional Government, located in Milan, with an alternative tensegrity solution.
