1575: just posthumous, Federico Commandino’s Latin version of PneumatikÉ by Erone Alessandrino is printed in Urbino. The text’s extraordinary fortune originates from here stretching along the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and intersecting with the emergence of mechanics as a discipline claiming its own unique status. The book attempts to track the dissemination of a text which, handled by engineers and human-ists alike, established a new technical knowledge under the banner of the ‘return of ancient philosophers’.

Da qui origina una straordinaria fortuna del testo lungo l’ultimo Cinquecento e il primo Seicento, che interseca l’affermarsi della meccanica quale disciplina rivendicante un proprio peculiare status. Il libro intende seguire la diffusione di un testo impugnato da ingegneri quanto da umanisti per la costituzione di un sapere tecnico sotto l’insegna del ‘ritorno dei filosofi antichi’.
