Abstract
In Herder's "laboratory of modernity" a radical renewal of the system of knowledge takes place, which implies a comparison with the major European thinkers and writers, protagonists of a long season that goes from the Renaissance to the French Enlightenment: from Francis Bacon to Hume, from Montaigne to Diderot. The twelve essays presented in the volume, carefully introduced and commented, show the original development of Herderian critical thinking in the philosophical, aesthetic-literary, and historical-political fields. Here we find the foundations of his most substantial works, namely This Too a Philosophy of History for the Formation of Humanity and Ideas on Philosophy of History of Mankind. These essays from the period 1765-1787 coagulate around the urgency of forming a taste and a public opinion, strong for the present and for the future. For the first time, particular emphasis is given to Herder's meeting with Goethe, which was decisive for the final drafting of the masterpiece of 1778, the Plastic, a true manifesto of the new empirical aesthetics of the Enlightenment, here equipped with a new commentary and note apparatus.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
