Regulatory bodies, such as the Environment Agency of England & Wales, regularly monitor river surface water to assess quality. Maintaining and improving quality is important for society but is also a necessary requirement to comply with European directives. Spatiotemporal additive models for nutrients in hydrological areas in England & Wales are presented to assess and describe spatial and temporal trends over the past 20 to 40 years.
