The book is a journey through the lives of marginalised people in Russia in the second half of the 19th century, a period of profound social change. Through the testimonies of writers, reporters and publicists of the time who were well acquainted with the situation in the countryside and in the cities, a raw and merciless picture of reality emerges. The volume analyses how rural and urban poverty, alcoholism, vagrancy and deviance became endemic phenomena, documented with increasing realism and attention, revealing the contradictions in a society caught between progress and injustice.
