The thesis involves the annotation of 7,552 tweets – published during the 2022 election campaign by 38 Italian politicians – in order to examine the presence of humor, its communicative functions, and any differences related to socio-demographic variables (age and gender of politicians) and political variables (party leader, party affiliation, coalition). Furthermore, a chapter is devoted to the study of humor markers and their relationship with the communicative functions of humor. Furthermore, two chapters are devoted to the analysis of two types of humor, namely: mock-(im)politeness and humorous hashtags. These chapters provide quantitative data and a detailed description of several examples. Overall, the project proves valuable both for understanding the use of humor in online political discourse and for exploring the methodological and theoretical issues associated with humor.
