Lingue che abitano il sé. Narrazione, identità e appartenenze tra qui e altrove

This thesis explores the connections between language, identity, and narrative, adopting a complex epistemological approach that weaves together multiple fields of knowledge: ethnoclinical studies, psychoanalysis, social psychology, postcolonial studies, literature, philosophy, and sociology. The research aims to investigate, on the one hand, the intrapsychic dynamics and defensive processes related to the learning of a second language; and, on the other, the role of narrative as a space for the construction of the self. The interplay of these various theoretical lenses helps to highlight how the mother tongue and the foreign language each encompass different symbolic and cultural systems, also reflecting identity positions shaped by power relations. Starting from a critical reflection on Western discourse – which has systematically deprived the other of the possibility to express their own voice and tell their own story – this thesis proposes a double movement of voice restitution: on one side, the analysis of postcolonial rewritings; on the other, the conduction of narrative interviews. The aim is to investigate the intertwining of language and the sense of self in migratory trajectories, shedding light on how identity is constructed and reshaped also through the languages one inhabits.

Questa tesi indaga i legami tra lingua, identità e narrazione, adottando un’ottica epistemologica complessa che intreccia saperi diversi: l’etnoclinica, la psicoanalisi, la psicologia sociale, gli studi postcoloniali, la letteratura, la filosofia e la sociologia. Il lavoro intende esplorare, da un lato, i risvolti intrapsichici e le dinamiche difensive legate all’apprendimento di una seconda lingua; dall’altro, il ruolo della narrazione come luogo di costruzione del sé. L’intreccio delle diverse lenti teoriche consente di mettere in luce come l’idioma materno e la lingua straniera racchiudano sistemi simbolici e culturali differenti, riflettendo altresì posizionamenti identitari anche determinati dalle relazioni di potere. A partire da una riflessione critica sul discorso occidentale – che ha sistematicamente privato l’altro della possibilità di esprimere la propria voce e di raccontare la propria storia – la tesi propone un doppio movimento di restituzione della voce: da un lato, l’analisi di riscritture postcoloniali; dall’altro, lo svolgimento di alcune interviste narrative. L’obiettivo è quello di ricercare gli intrecci tra la lingua e il senso del sé nei percorsi migratori, mettendo in luce come l’identità si costruisce e si ridefinisce anche attraverso le lingue che si abitano.
