Titles are "obligatory" (Gérard Genette) components of doing books and doing literature. In the everyday handling of literary texts—whether in book form or not—they play a role that can hardly be overestimated. Kodex 13 takes this observation as its point of departure and expands research on titles in book and literary studies by adding a praxeological perspective. This volume examines the actors who work with titles and the practical knowledge, techniques, and routines that enable—and at the same time constrain—the production, mediation, and reception of (book-based) literature through titles. It investigates the various forms of titles and considers them, in the literal sense of the word, as objects: material textual entities embedded in networks of social practice. It also explores the ways in which titles, as paratexts intertwined with social practices, are represented and negotiated within literature. The interdisciplinary contributions demonstrate how and to what extent titles shape our engagement with books and literature, and how their use is itself fundamentally conditioned by this complex interplay of social activities.
