Rileggere Mario De Micheli

For a long time a central figure in twentieth-century Italian art criticism, Mario De Micheli has so far not been the subject of an overall reflection capable of conveying his intellectual complexity. This volume aims to begin a first organic re-reading of his work, bringing historical-critical studies into dialogue with direct testimonies. The contributions address some of the fundamental junctures of his career: the interpretation of the avant-gardes, the relationship between art and politics, the question of realism, his editorial activity and his experience of teaching, alongside less explored areas of his research. What emerges is the profile of an intellectual for whom art criticism coincides with a historical practice and with taking a stand in the present. The final sections broaden the documentary and memorial perspective, opening up new possibilities for the study of his critical legacy.
