Moving within the broad framework of cultural studies, with insights suggested by the ground-breaking models of socio-anthropology and geo-history, the present research aims at offering a fresh view of some cultural dynamics involved in the perception and consumption of heritage in the Balkans, with a special focus on Serbia and Belgrade. The research hypothesis is that the natural and cultural heritage around the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube in Belgrade (known as The Belgrade Confluence) has not been adequately researched and/or interpreted. A careful mapping of the mentioned territory has confirmed that The Belgrade Confluence played in fact a crucial role in the birth and development of the city, particularly with regard to its vocation as a “crossroad” settlement. Another issue this research has addressed is the widespread lack of awareness, among citizens of Belgrade, of their multicultural identity. Recent studies that connect heritage with the notions of past, memory and identity, have lead us to believe that heritage might be a key instrument for shedding light on multicultural identities. Elective methodological tools range from literary and archival readings or content and discourse analysis to fieldwork and semi-structured interviews. These have corroborated the initial research hypothesis over The Belgrade Confluence and pointed out flaws perpetuated by the socio-political system and governmental bodies. Also, having in mind the substantial degree of urban transformation Belgrade is currently undergoing that reflects the conservation and development of its culture and heritage sites, several perspectives are included in the analysis of this situation. In particular, in the wake of studies focused on Belgrade in a present-day form, research has brought to our attention the crucial function of reading signs that name and convey a space significantly transformed through time. By way of conclusion, the thesis proposes an interdisciplinary project in form of an audio-visual exhibition, based on the concepts of landscape and soundscape and the fact that boundaries between visual and aural experience are fluid. The exhibition’s intention is to promote the creation of narrative tales, as the competing natural and cultural layers of the city’s landscape stimulate the imagination of visitors.
