Expert witness testimony during a criminal trial is an example of interprofesional discourse, which involves talk among specialists from different disciplines. This examination may be the scenario of potential clashes between different professional egos, as it represents the common ground where the law meets other professional practices having their own methodology and definitional perspectives. This paper discusses the main interactional dynamics displayed by expert witnesses in order to protect and buttress their own authority during the taking of evidence.

Abstract

Expert witness testimony during a criminal trial is an example of interprofesional discourse, which involves talk among specialists from different disciplines. This examination may be the scenario of potential clashes between different professional egos, as it represents the common ground where the law meets other professional practices having their own methodology and definitional perspectives. This paper discusses the main interactional dynamics displayed by expert witnesses in order to protect and buttress their own authority during the taking of evidence.
