This chapter presents the magazine Cultura Integral y Femenina, published in Madrid between 1933 and 1936, and a series of articles written by medical doctors and scientists —all of them men— in which the woman as a patient is reduced to the object of male discourse. All advice directed to women comes from experts who, besides trying to prevent the spread of diseases, step into traditionally feminine areas such as the care of children, woman’s health and beauty and hygiene of the house, thus depriving women of authority on themselves and their bodies through science.

Abstract
This chapter presents the magazine Cultura Integral y Femenina, published in Madrid between 1933 and 1936, and a series of articles written by medical doctors and scientists —all of them men— in which the woman as a patient is reduced to the object of male discourse. All advice directed to women comes from experts who, besides trying to prevent the spread of diseases, step into traditionally feminine areas such as the care of children, woman’s health and beauty and hygiene of the house, thus depriving women of authority on themselves and their bodies through science.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
