Despite smart technologies playing a fundamental role in enabling the creation of Product Service System (PSS) value, understanding how to transform data into information and knowledge is still a critical issue. This paper adopts a mixed research methodology consisting of literature review, case studies, survey and interviews to analyse the main challenges that companies have to face when translating big data into actions in a PSS domain. Lessons learnt are used to develop a process to help companies understand the complexities of integrating smart technologies into their existing offerings, to provide the value the customer expects. The process is composed of five main phases and supports ecosystem engagement in PSS value creation.
