The essay investigates the history of legal professions in Medici’s Grand Duchy between XVI and XVIII centuries. The essay analyzes the reform of the Florentine guild of lawyers by Cosimo I and its gradual acquisition of the control of the access to the profession of notary, procurator and advocate throughout the “Stato vecchio”. In this study we can see also that between XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries the procurators came close to the advocates, so much that they were considered almost interchangeable professions.
