This paper focuses on the reconfiguration and scheduling optimization of a complex Flexible Manufacturing System and proposes a complete methodology from problem statement to analysis and solution definition and assessment. In particular, Discrete Event Simulation (DES) has been used to support decision-making. A complex case study has been carried out in an Italian company, with the aim of assessing the internalization of a production phase and, at the same time, identifying a scheduling algorithm minimizing the total cycle time. In particular, the optimization algorithm has been integrated with the simulation tool providing a direct assessment of the scheduling on the simulated process.
