The paper examines for the first time the manuscript tradition of Francesco Bracciolini’s poem La Bulgheria convertita, published in 1637. The study of the manuscripts confirms that the subject – a medieval story of a religious conversion – was suggested to the author by pope Urbano VIII Barberini. The paper firstly inspects the possible reasons lying behind this choice within the political and religious context of that time. Then, it lingers on the actual quality of the work: though it was meant to be a heroic poem in the intentions of the author, it eventually became much more tending to the fictional and the supernatural, with a mix of sacred and profane elements turning out to be very distant from the “Christian marvellous” conceived by Tasso. A stylistic analysis, involving the study of the different drafts of the work, shows more over that Bracciolini tends toward a laborious and ambitious language, which appears to be a distinctive feature of what is called ‘Barberinian poetics’. At the same time, this aspect reveals the permeability of such a narrative ‘ottava rima’ poem to the stylistic trends of the contemporary lyric poetry.
l saggio esamina, attraverso lo studio della tradizione manoscritta, mai sinora presa in considerazione, il poema di Francesco Bracciolini La Bulgheria convertita, pubblicato nel 1637. Dai manoscritti si ha conferma di come il tema, una storia medievale di conversione, sia stato suggerito al poeta dal papa Urbano VIII Barberini. Il saggio indaga le possibili motivazioni di questa scelta nel panorama politico-religioso contemporaneo. Si sofferma poi sugli esiti effettivi del poema, nelle intenzioni eroico ma nella realtà assai incline al romanzesco e a un soprannaturale misto di elementi sacri e profani lontanissimo dal 'meraviglioso cristiano' del Tasso. Sul piano stilistico, analizzato attraverso uno studio delle varie redazioni, Bracciolini mostra un'inclinazione al concettoso e all'ardito che rivela insieme i tratti non monocordi della cosiddetta 'poetica barberiniana' e la permeabilità del poema narrativo in ottave alle istanze stilistiche della coeva poesia lirica.
