One of Francesco Gonin’s illustrations for the second edition of Manzoni’s The Betrothed (the Quarantana of 1840-42), carried out under the author’s close guidance, shows the baby Gertrude playing with dolls dressed up as nuns. We consider how, in line with Manzoni’s wishes, the image enriches the meaning of the written text, as in a modern graphic novel. We then point to some of Manzoni’s potential sources for the verbal and pictorial implications of this scene, including manuals and sermons on religious education as well as portraits of aristocratic children.

Abstract
One of Francesco Gonin’s illustrations for the second edition of Manzoni’s The Betrothed (the Quarantana of 1840-42), carried out under the author’s close guidance, shows the baby Gertrude playing with dolls dressed up as nuns. We consider how, in line with Manzoni’s wishes, the image enriches the meaning of the written text, as in a modern graphic novel. We then point to some of Manzoni’s potential sources for the verbal and pictorial implications of this scene, including manuals and sermons on religious education as well as portraits of aristocratic children.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
