In this paper I discuss Mazzone’s view according to which pragmatic inferences can be accounted for by schemata. The idea is that pragmatic inferences are realised by the hierarchical-associative architecture of semantic memory. I will argue that the concept of schema can hardly account for all kinds of inferences presumably involved in the processes of comprehension and I will outline a more articulated explanatory model in which some inferences require propositional representations.

Abstract

In this paper I discuss Mazzone’s view according to which pragmatic inferences can be accounted for by schemata. The idea is that pragmatic inferences are realised by the hierarchical-associative architecture of semantic memory. I will argue that the concept of schema can hardly account for all kinds of inferences presumably involved in the processes of comprehension and I will outline a more articulated explanatory model in which some inferences require propositional representations.
