The latest economic and environmental changes together with the increase of urban population is changing the traditional concept of city promoting the so called "smart city". This new concept promotes sustainable economic growth and a wise management of resources in order to create a better place where people can live and interact. This work discusses an engineering approach to be followed during the identification and the development of new solutions inside the smart city context. Some methods for the structured design of solutions are discussed with a specific focus on methods for the collection of citizens needs and the ideation of new smart city solutions. An exemplification of the proposed methods is described in relation to the city of Bergamo.
