The aim of this article is threefold. First, it provides a definition of the philanthropic venture capital concept and presents different typologies of philanthropic venture capitalists in terms of the social enterprises they support and the outcomes to which they tend to give rise. Second, it describes the investment model adopted by philanthropic venture capitalists. And third, it presents the investment policy that characterizes the emerging philanthropic venture capital industry, with a special focus on the composition of its portfolio.
