Marina Chini’s contribution to the studies of Italian as a second language from an acquisitional and an educational perspective is revisited with the aim to highlight her innovative integrative approach in the framework of a typological functionalism. Particular attention is devoted to her investigation of the development of the category gender in Italian L2, of the strategies of textual organization in the Italian retellings of advanced learners with L1s with different typological distance from Italian, and of the interaction between teaching and acquisition.
