We illustrate a general methodology based upon a suitable application of Gauss theorem to evaluate the vertical stress within a homogeneous isotropic elastic halfspace due to pressures linearly distributed over polygonal domains of arbitrary shape.Charts and tables are provided in order to facilitate the pratical application of the results contributed in the paper by means of hand calculations.
