My contribution on the theme "Homo vagus et inconstans. Private Winckelmann" starts from a definition on the Winckelmann's personality formulated by the rector of the Cöllnisches Gymnasium in Berlin,Bake, who dates back to the time in Winckelmann was studying there. Many interpreters of the biography and of the work of the scholar of classical antiquities considered this definition to frame the personality of the founder of the modern archeology (Wolfgang Richter, "Homo vagus et inconstans": Ein Urteil über Winckelmann ", in: Festschrift für Gottfried Lücken, Rostock 1968, pp. 731-745). I discuss here the temperament of Winckelmann's character in relation to the choices he had to face in the transfer from his native Germany to Italy and on the basis of his epistolary. The considerations that Goethe expressed on the personality of the citizen of Stendal in his biography "Winckelmann und sein Jahrhundert" are then presented with the function of recording and highlighting aspects of the enterprise of the citizen of Stendal. A third moment regards the "strategies and contradictions" that characterize Winckelmann's positioning in the context of international relations. The focus of the last part of this essay concerns the importance of the "Bildersprache" in the last phase of its activity.

Abstract
The focus of the last part of this essay concerns the importance of the "Bildersprache" in the last phase of its activity.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
