The essay focuses on the formation of a "system" of pragmatic records in the late medieval Piedmontese communes. Despite the loss of autonomy in the 13th century, the little communes of western Piedmont developed complex documentary systems, based on the recording of information related to the internal government (financial management, epistolary communication with the prince, judiciary activity) in series of registers linked to each other by functional relationships and intertextuality.
