In the global age the public sphere, the weaving of relationships between people and contexts, seems to have undergone a loss of meaning. The article analyses the way in which the crisis of the public sphere can find in urban spaces opportunities for a regeneration that would allow the development of individual and collective identities. Social dynamics unquestionably shape the urban space. Conversely, the urban space structures historical and social proc- esses. In other words, the urban public space is where an incessant translation practice takes form: the unfolding of a “third space,” an intermediate dimension, where differences are articulated.

Abstract

In the global age the public sphere, the weaving of relationships between people and contexts, seems to have undergone a loss of meaning. The article analyses the way in which the crisis of the public sphere can find in urban spaces opportunities for a regeneration that would allow the development of individual and collective identities. Social dynamics unquestionably shape the urban space. Conversely, the urban space structures historical and social proc- esses. In other words, the urban public space is where an incessant translation practice takes form: the unfolding of a “third space,” an intermediate dimension, where differences are articulated.
