The purpose of the present study was to assess the extent to which the sense of coherence (SOC), that is a way of perceiving and interpreting the world as more or less comprehensible, manageable and meaningful (Antonovsky, 1979, 1987), is related to the perception of coniugal support, parent-child communication and social support of couples with at least one child aged between 6 and 19. Different types of couple were identified on the basis of SOC levels of wife and husband: couples where both spouses have a high or low sense of coherence (congruent couples) and couples where only a member has a strong SOC (incongruent couples); then we compared the perceptions of relationships reported by spouses in the different types of couple. In accordance with salutogenic model, the results showed that, in the couples whose both members have a high sense of coherence, wives and husbands report good relationships, better than ones reported in the couples whose both members have a low sense of coherence. In this last type of couple, spouses report problematic relationships. Moreover, differences between incongruent dyads, where only one spouse has a strong SOC, emerge and indicate the existence of a different mental and relational functioning for wives and husbands, as well as a centrality of wives’ world perception in the couple functioning.

Abstract
Moreover, differences between incongruent dyads, where only one spouse has a strong SOC, emerge and indicate the existence of a different mental and relational functioning for wives and husbands, as well as a centrality of wives’ world perception in the couple functioning.Pubblicazioni consigliate
