The essayprovides a critical edition of a donation that Humbert, a count of the kingdom of Burgundy, made in 1040 in favor of two religious institutions of the city of Aosta. The authenticity of the document has been the subject of long historiographical debates since the 18th century, as part of the claims of autonomy of the nobility of the Aosta Valley. The paper reconstructs the archival history of the document. An analysis of the content and textual structure allows to reconstruct the methods of its production.
