The essay analyses the documentary sources (mostly forgeries) used in the construction of the "incredible genealogy" of a noble Piedmontese family, the counts of Valperga, between the late Middle Ages and the 19th century. This genealogical narrative is based on the figure of Arduin, ruler of the kingdom of Italy in the 11th century, who is presented as the forefather of the family.
