Entre le XIXe siècle et le XXe siècle, la migration de la culture théâtrale italienne vers la Californie est caractérisée par des formes dramaturgiques traditionnelles mixtes, telles que les stenterellate florentins. Ce sont des interprétations pantomimiques chantées, également connue sous le nom de vaudeville « à l’italienne ». Les aventures et les histoires de Stenterello se conformaient pour symboliser les malheurs et les peines harcelant le migrant, un nouveau citoyen américain.
