The Memory of the Sea: Exhibiting a Museum

The chapter describes one of the experimental actions developed within the framework of the MeLa* Project - European Museums in an Age of Migrations. As an example of the "research by action" metohodology, the chapter critically explores the actions put in place as a critical, dynamic, dialogic tool around the Sea Memory Museum in Zarzis, Tunisia. A travelling photographic exhibition, as well as a series of educational workshops for different audiences, digital participatory devices, seminars and conferences accompanied the exhibition throughout its different stages (Museo Luigi Pigorini, Rome; Istituto di Cultura Italiana, Marseille; Centre de Recherche sur les Migrations Humaines, Dudelange, Luxembourg; GAMeC, Bergamo). The chapter identifies in the "field curatorial research" a strong conceptual framework for the development of new, anti-rethorical narratives around the representation of migration.
