The chapter describes the most recent developements in the field of social and radical museology, with a focus on representation and the choice of words in museum texts. By describing a few seminal international examples (from the USA, the Netherlands and the UK), the essay demonstrates how labels have become more and more at the core of a new form of museological activism, when it comes to issues of racism, identity and belonging. Two interviews (Worcester Art Museum, Massachussets and Research Centre for Material Culture, Amsterdam) contribute to prove the point.

Abstract

The chapter describes the most recent developements in the field of social and radical museology, with a focus on representation and the choice of words in museum texts. By describing a few seminal international examples (from the USA, the Netherlands and the UK), the essay demonstrates how labels have become more and more at the core of a new form of museological activism, when it comes to issues of racism, identity and belonging. Two interviews (Worcester Art Museum, Massachussets and Research Centre for Material Culture, Amsterdam) contribute to prove the point.
