The expression of emotions plays an important role in political communication. It is not uncommon to see politicians expressing enthusiasm in their speeches or reacting indignantly to criticism or objections. To a large extent, these emotions are not authentic, but are carefully pre-planned and staged during public appearances, mostly to attract public attention and achieve consensus. The expression of emotions in the language used by politicians is thus regulated and adapted to communicative patterns. This article investigates how indignation is expressed prosodically in political speeches with the aim of identifying and describing possible exemplary realisations.

Abstract

The expression of emotions plays an important role in political communication. It is not uncommon to see politicians expressing enthusiasm in their speeches or reacting indignantly to criticism or objections. To a large extent, these emotions are not authentic, but are carefully pre-planned and staged during public appearances, mostly to attract public attention and achieve consensus. The expression of emotions in the language used by politicians is thus regulated and adapted to communicative patterns. This article investigates how indignation is expressed prosodically in political speeches with the aim of identifying and describing possible exemplary realisations.
