Forms of Argumentation and Verbal Aggression in the Darien Pamphlets

Breve descrizione dei contenuti (3.500 caratteri) This chapter discusses the linguistic strategies employed by encoders of argumentative pamphlets on the expedition to Darien. As the expedition was a dramatic failure, a battle of texts ensued – some supporting the initiative, others arguing against it and stressing its weak points. The study highlights the role played by modality and evaluative discourse in order to persuade the recipient of the validity of the encoder’s stance.
