Over 250 judiciary records, produced before 1400, are known for the Piedmontese territories ruled by the house of Savoy. The writing practices of the scribes working for local courts and general judges are here analysed with reference to their diplomatic structure. The study also focuses on the functional relationships between these and other texts, such as accounting records and princely letters. The transformation of these features depended not only on the local reception of widespread technical models, but also on their adaptation to the Piedmontese institutional and political context. The fluctuation between office records and notarial records was due both to the different kinds of relationship between scribes and institutions and the different levels of formalization of the Sabaudian judicial offices. The evolution of the structure and type of records, which became more and more complicated, was linked to the increasing intervention of the central authority in the local administration of justice.

Abstract
The evolution of the structure and type of records, which became more and more complicated, was linked to the increasing intervention of the central authority in the local administration of justice.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
