Central functions, as buildings and other urban materials have moved, from established urban cores to suburb. This move -which is both cause and as effect of the increase of private mobility and new spatial behaviours of their inhabitants- it transforms the territory. The question is if we will be able, as researchers of the city, to face it. This essay try to demonstrate the loss of effectiveness of the conceptual tools of urbanism, still based on functionalism with the sample of centrality, which is a feature of different kinds of space and not a homogeneous expression. This is the reason why in this essay we focus on the different aggregations of central functions, we study those proprieties and on the role of the places of centrality in the territorial pattern.

Abstract
Central functions, as buildings and other urban materials have moved, from established urban cores to suburb. This move -which is both cause and as effect of the increase of private mobility and new spatial behaviours of their inhabitants- it transforms the territory. The question is if we will be able, as researchers of the city, to face it. This essay try to demonstrate the loss of effectiveness of the conceptual tools of urbanism, still based on functionalism with the sample of centrality, which is a feature of different kinds of space and not a homogeneous expression. This is the reason why in this essay we focus on the different aggregations of central functions, we study those proprieties and on the role of the places of centrality in the territorial pattern.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
