This study makes a careful survey of the correspondence of the years 1792-1793 between the German romantic authors Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder and Ludwig Tieck starting from their different reaction to pain in private and public life. Incorporating the reception of the aesthetic theories of the period and the stoic model of the antiquity, this article examines the theme of suicide, some aspects of the stoic doctrine also in relation to Justus Lipsius' model of constancy, the question of Shakespeare's reception of stoicism and the relationship between the aesthetics of the sublime and male heroism.
