The mancipatio is an extremely ancient act of Roman law. Originally a sale, once minted coin became the normal currency, the mancipatio became a formal act needed to transfer the ownership of goods belonging to the category of res mancipi between Roman citizens. It was also used by Roman jurisprudence as a basis on which to build new legal acts serving different purposes.
