European countries are characterized by large gender differences in the labour market, with Nordic countries registering lower employment and activity gaps between men and women compared to Southern ones. One of the main exception consists of gender differences in gender-based discrimination and violence at the workplace. Starting from the descriptive analysis of the data from the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS), this chapter discusses the role of cross-country differences in equal opportunity policies, social norms and gender-based stereotypes in explaining this paradox. Furthermore, it provides a back-of-the-envelope estimate of the economic costs of workplace gender violence.
